Cowbell

Image
Previously noted that cowbells are popular in the CFL: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2023/11/cfl.html But one thing noticed when the World Serious moved to FL for the 3rd game was cowbell.  Per AI this is apparently a thing with rules: the shortened original:  https://www.youtube.com/shorts/mtOXAIODnGc    the whole original:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVsQLlk-T0s Here's an example of cowbell from Tropicana Field in 2013: source:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfuyFRRj5pQ But what else would you expect from a Florida team, normalcy ?  Tropicana Field appears to be a spaceship: There are little tufts of sand or coconut shells or ? kicked up when a ball hits in the outfield: Oh yeah => the Brewers WON the 2026 series in 5: It was inevitable, the Brewers 2026 season reminded me of one of the Kilauea eruptions on the big island of Hawaii.  A video of lava coming down a road - not super fast or red hot but just an unstoppable wall: ...

Brewers Logo

The Brewers don't play until Friday: Game 1 of the World Serious versus the American League's best, the Tampa Bay Rays.  But until then, I thought this was an interesting story: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/601403/2018/10/19/when-i-see-somebody-wearing-it-i-go-ive-got-a-story-for-you-the-inspired-melancholy-life-behind-the-brewers-beloved-logo/?unlocked_article_code=1.I1E.LJLK.jnoqmAnbbzXL&source=emp_shared_article&smid=url-share-ta&source=athletic_thewindup_newsletter&campaign=20461308&userId=21227649 I certainly  never "saw" the m and b in the ball and glove before reading this :)  The story is also presented in the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milwaukee_Brewers_ball-in-glove_logo Mandatory inflated prize amount: It really is a clever design, simple but meaningful.  The ending of Tom Meindel's life was sad. "The Brewers Win The Pennant, Oh My God, The Brewers Win The Pennant !"

Image
It was amazing !  The Brewers swept the Dodgers in 4 - the exact opposite of last year.  The Dodgers played pretty well, Shohei finally hit a homer.  Their pitcher, Tyler Glasnow, was unhittable for the first time through the order but then cracks started to appear.  The Brewers never gave up and nibbled away while shutting down the Dodgers after the 2nd inning. I listened to the game on the radio, Jeff Levering made an amazing call at the end:   https://x.com/620wtmj/status/2110935208094535974     source:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVjnWhgxzjM Not coincidentally (thanks Youtube algorithm) I watched the documentary:  Ueck earlier in the day: source:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoSwFGeVn7E The Brewers have been so close the last few years, now they finally made it to the World Serious  :)  Ueck woulda loved it.  I think this is the year. Update afternoon: Pat Murphy after the win:   So he got a ...

Smile Monday

Image
Sometimes things go right two Sundays in a row, last week both the Brewers and Packers won: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2026/10/similarities.html This week, the Packers beat their rival, the Bears, 31-7.   Played at noon, sunshine, windy day at Lambeau.  Just really a no doubter, amazing.  The Bears had their run game taken away by rapid long bomb throws by the Packers.  The Packers kicker, Smack, got squirrely and missed field goals and an extra point though.  The Bears were missing players, mainly the QB Williams, but so what ?  Every team is missing players - smile of satisfaction number one. Then in the evening the Brewers beat the Dodgers, 2-1.   The only home run ? by Brewers 2nd baseman Brice Turang, no answers from the Dodgers.  The Miz didn't look super sharp but good enough.  Remember that the Dodgers swept the Brewers last year in the NLCS, not this year !  Smile of satisfaction number two ! It was a good Sunday to waste insid...

Another Sunday of Tidbits

Image
1) Forma Scientific clipboard: I got this freebie clipboard sometime in the 1980s or 1990s while working at GTE.  Legal size, it was an OK clipboard but just recently I heard a "clink" sound when picking it up.  I found these two pieces on the floor of one of the springs for the clip: Where am I going to get a replacement for that spring ?  I'd have to make one - the clipboard still clips but once the other spring breaks that'll be about it.  Although I do have some of these Boston clips: We'll see how it goes. 2) I went over to Mann's Store on Saturday morning.   There were many cars by the Farm Museum on Jackson Harbor road for the cider pressing event.  So on the way back from the store I decided to take the scenic route down Town Line road.  Here is probably the biggest elm tree on the island: Saturday was a windy day When I was a kid there were thousands of these trees in the Milwaukee area.  Imagine them on both sides of the street with...

Mike Ditka

Image
Hearing that Mike Ditka died the first thing I was reminded of was this:  I am still living in the Chicago area, so 1993 or before, watching the NBC NFL either pre-game or post-game show.  Ditka is one of the guys behind the desk - this might have been his first broadcast.  He is chewing gum.  I suppose they wouldn't let him smoke ?  Anyway the host "throws" it over to Mike for a comment and there is dead silence.  A couple of heart beats later Ditka says something like: "I almost swallowed my gum !"  What a dope ! I tried looking on Youtube but didn't find any videos - probably just as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Ditka Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

Similarities

Image
In wins: both the Packers and the Brewers won on Sunday.  First the Packers beat a winless team by 3 points.  The Buccaneers had an undrafted, 2nd string rookie QB and actually played pretty well: The Brewers walked off the hottest team in MLB: : I hope both the Brewers and the Packers can make their way to championships this season ! Also, I (not being that bright) never noticed that the open roof on Miller Park (now American Family Field) resembles the pie shaped wedge of a baseball field: And that the baseball field roof and the Calatrava "wings" kinda recall each other, they both fold and move: Someday I gotta get down there and see them in person. Anyway, a good victory Monday for Wisconsin. Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

Sunday Tidbits

Image
Sorry, I won't bother to watch this sloppy AI video: As an old QA IC test engineer, one thing I know is that the SN7400 had 14 pins (7 on each side of a DIP package), six must have seemed reasonable to the AI and the sloppy human initiator. Brewers win the the first game with the Padres on Saturday: A couple of homers by the Brewers, just enough to win, no style points in MLB. A timer for the playoffs: Usually I use my Morse Dial Timer so I can mute the radio but noticed in the first Brewers Padres playoff game, the commercial breaks have lengthened for the network commercials away from the usual 2:15 to 2:45 ?  2 minutes isn't long enough and 3 minutes is too long.  This built-in Windows 11 timer can be set for hours/minutes/seconds so will try that in game 2.  Here is the online doc for the timer: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/how-to-use-alarms-and-timers-in-the-clock-app-in-windows Tony Romo and CBS part ways: Maybe Tony will "pick-up a coupla CBS bu...

One-oh-three

Image
The Brewers finished the 2026 season on Sunday, beating the Cardinals 6-4 and ending with 103 wins and 59 losses - an amazing record for them.   They finished the season with 5 straight wins, strangely their longest win streak of the season.  They also had a 6 game losing streak near the start of the season but otherwise a lot more green than red: source:  https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/2026-schedule-scores.shtml      Remember last year George Webb gave away free burgers: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2025/08/eleven-in-row-again.html So instead of being streaky this year the Brewers seem to have evened things out.  AND the finish by sweeping the Cards was the cherry on top.  I'll still remember the 1982 World Serious when the Cards beat the Brewers in seven games.  The irritation that made it memorable for me was seeing Ozzie Smith do all those flips :( Robin Yount is also a shortstop in Cooperstown but he didn't do back flips sou...

What a difference a week makes

Image
This post was from last Sunday 2026-09-13: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2026/09/hey-everybody-its-time-for-beating.html But this is how Youtube served up the vids on Monday morning: you know the Brewers have won when they have their own video highlights Yesterday the Packers won an overtime noon game: The Packers lost a couple of players early and the whole game was a wet, ugly mess but a win is a win is a cliche. And the Brewers also won their 98th (a new team record) game of the season in the evening: Six more games in the season for the Brewers. But I did waste a pretty decent Sunday inside - I also ate way too much :( Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

Hey Everybody, It's Time For A Beating !

Image
I *should* have been working on stuff outside, Sunday was a nice day.  But I wanted to catch the Brewers and Packers play, yikes !  After the games I was greeted with this by the Youtube algorithm: Brewers versus Reds: source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRk5l7n4BMw Packers versus Vikings: source:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6wKdU-5kME In MLB baseball if the team wins 2 of every 3 games that's 108 wins for the season, pretty rare and probably World Serious bound.     In NFL football if the team wins 2 of every 3 games that's 11 wins for the season, fairly common and probably one and done in the playoffs.   There's still tomorrow, Monday should be a nice day - also the Brewers and Packers don't play Monday :) Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm
