A Crummy Commercial

I tried looking up the residents of Carnegie Hall on the 1950 Census at Familysearch.org (you need a free account).  I did find Editta Sherman and her husband on lines 15 and 14 of this page: Genealogical searches are much easier when people have unique names The address for the residences/studios in Carnegie Hall was apparently 154 West 57th Street.  Editta Sherman was featured in the documentary on Bill Cunningham mentioned in the blog yesterday: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2023/12/carnegie-hall.html Looking at some of the other 1950 census pages for Carnegie Hall I found this one: The name on line 7 stood out to me: Edwin Quinby - mainly because his occupation was listed as Engineer / Electronic working in the field of Calculating Machines !  The other people on the page are artists, voice teachers, dance teachers, actress and so on - they sound more of a fit for Carnegie Hall. It's been quite a while since the 1950 census was put online (2022-04-01), see the previous post: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2022/04/the-1950-census-records-are-now-online.html The wonderful volunteers at familysearch.org have been busy organizing and have a search page setup for most of the states: https://www.familysearch.org/1950census/ I retried looking for Fred Allen and Portland Hoffa but still no luck - and I know where they lived in NYC. yes Fred, I am an idiot But 60 year old Alfred P. Morgan, his wife Ruth and 2 of their 3 sons (Charles and Thomas) were fairly easy to find (line 3): https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6F9Y-BMQR Here is the actual census page: Perhaps the oldest son (21 in 1950), Alfred Jr. was away at school or working. The family also still lives at 69 Brookfield road in Upper Montclair NJ.  But the brother-in-law, Bruce Shackelford (an airplane mechanic in 1940 ?) no longer lives with the Morgans.   in fooling with the online 1950 Census records: (see earlier blog:  https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2022/04/the-1950-census-records-are-now-online.html ) I realized that Familysearch dot org also had the records for earlier censuses from the 20th century: 1940: https://www.familysearch.org/1940census (I tried posting links for the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census pages on familysearch but blogger doesn't like that for some reason.  But they are easily found with appropriate web searches.) They may go back further but the people I knew and am interested in were born in the 20th century.  I was able to find my grandfather, Charles, in the 1920 to 1950 census forms but not in 1910.   Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

After 72 years the data for the 1950 Census of the United States has been made available online: https://1950census.archives.gov/search/ In addition to searching for my family members I also took a look for Old Time Radio favorites.  The first I found was Jack Benny: Jack Benny, his family and staff See line 18.  Jack lived at 1002 N. Roxbury Dr. in Beverly Hills along with his wife, Mary, daughter Joan, two maids, a cook, a butler and a secretary. Danny Kaye (see line 4) only had 6 in his household including his wife, Sylvia, his daughter along with the nurse, butler and cook. The searching is still a little rough and sometimes there are mistakes by the Census taker.  For example: searching for Danny Kaye might have missed him because his name is listed as Kay (no final letter e). For the 1940 census I use Familysearch.org.  I think it may take Familysearch a while to digest the 1950 dataset before they can offer it on their web site. here are a couple of my pages o...
