It Happened Again

Image
I saw a new NOVA program on the PBS schedule and actually fired up my TV on Wednesday night at 8 PM.  The first time since Sunday I have used the set.  I got comfortable and started to watch and then all of a sudden it's over and I've missed almost the whole show by falling asleep ! Luckily it was posted on Youtube this morning: source:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMmumIoSMpM PBS is sitting on a goldmine for a safe, effective insomnia cure ! The ultimate invasive species ?

Image
Why Homo Sapiens !  Those folks will walk anywhere, adapt to any conditions, elbow out the current inhabitants - there's no stopping them ! source:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOwzSoDm5ws I have to admit that while I remembered that NOVA was on, and that the Brewers had played in the afternoon, I still started nodding off as usual towards the end of the NOVA .   Good thing that the show was available on Youtube as well because I still haven't fixed the PVR power supply so I couldn't record it. They started walking out of Africa, proceeded all around Eurasia, continued down through North and Central America and finally got down to the tip of South America (although this program stopped at the jumping off to Australia).  These folks took advantage of the lower sea levels and resulting land bridges for their treks (while also mastering travel across water).  It was a good stretch of the legs, no wonder that distance running is the bedrock of the Olympic games...

The most reliable and safest sleep aid ?

Image
CONFIRMED.  See the previous mention: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2022/05/the-safest-sleep-aid-ever-invented.html This week a new episode of NOVA: When Whales Could Walk I only made it through about half of this episode last night, luckily it is on Youtube: source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5rxaBv9_IU I remember reading this comment by Stewart Brand in the Whole Earth Catalog:   The dolphins went back, and they're doing all right. Before watching this NOVA I never realized that whales and hippos evolved from a common land ancestor though, interesting. Also, I gotta get on ebay and buy some Edwin Tunis books, those drawings were magical. Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

NOVA New Eye on the Universe - JWST preliminary results

Image
. I watched the recent NOVA program about the JWST and the first results of various investigations.  One thing is that PBS Wisconsin has moved NOVA to the 9 pm time slot from 8 pm.  Why does this matter ? see: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2022/05/the-safest-sleep-aid-ever-invented.html Yes it happened again, about 1/2 way through I nodded off. Luckily PBS does also post NOVA to Youtube so I can rewatch the show: source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAuET8rA7NA The part about the calibration of the image sensors was interesting, I would have thought that this would have been nailed down on the ground but apparently they need to be done in space on the system as a whole using a standard set of stars. After almost a year a confirmation of NOVA as a safe, effective, low cost sleep aid :) Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

Using the Sun's gravity to create an enormous space telescope

Image
Videos from PBS Space Time's Dr. Matt O'Dowd appear on my Youtube feed a lot.  This one was really kinda cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d0EGIt1SPc I'd mentioned those "Dali-esque" gravitational lensed galaxies before in a blog post on the JWST: https://wb9kzy.blogspot.com/2022/07/jwst-on-pbs-program-nova.html But it never occurred to me that this phenomenon could be used with the largest mass in our region (the Sun) to create a big big space telescope. I am glad that there are a lot of smart folks in the world to dream this kinda stuff up :) As a ham I have to wonder if gravitational lensing could also be used for radio/TV ?  Probably it can but the longer wavelengths would make it even more impractical ? But it would be really cool to listen to alien radio :) Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm

The safest sleep aid ever invented ?

Image
I used to kid my Dad - when we would watch the PBS show NOVA (can't believe there have been 49 seasons !), he would never make it through the show, he'd be asleep, at least until I'd make a rude noise. Guess what ?  Now watching NOVA does the same thing to me.  They had a 2 part episode on dinosaurs and the asteroid strike, hosted by David Attenborough (of course his late brother, Richard, was one of the stars of Jurrassic Park): These viewing links are only good through June 8, 2022. https://www.pbs.org/video/dinosaur-apocalypse-the-new-evidence-rchsjr/ https://www.pbs.org/video/dinosaur-apocalypse-the-last-day-h80ueb/ Who doesn't love learning about dinosaurs ?  Especially with that Jurassic Park style CGI.  I made it almost all the way through the first one but by 10pm I was asleep.  You might say who cares, you can watch it online anytime.  Or record it and watch it later.  But I find that often if I do that I won't finish watching the show, ...
