Braves Yankees 1957 World Serious Game 1

The Brewers had a day off on Monday, August 24, 2026.  So why not listen to game one from the Braves - Yankees 1957 World Series ?

(BTW if you don't like the usage of serious for series then don't read the book, You Know Me Al, by Holden Caufield's favorite author: Ring Lardner - OK, Lardner was his favorite author other than his brother D.B.):

Here is the story that Holden mentions:

A few thoughts on the game:

Earl Gillespie did the intro !!

Earl was a local sportscaster at WITI channel 6 in Milwaukee when I was a kid.  He gives Tony Kubek a shoutout as being from Milwaukee of course.  AND he doesn't say HANK Aaron, he says Henry Aaron !  .322 batting average, 44 home runs and 132 RBI, amazing, just think if the Brewers had Henry Aaron - oh wait they did !  :)  Earl was a little stilted compared to someone like Mel Allen but he wasn't  in his plaid sport coat era yet :)

A lady opera type singer for the anthem !  Yikes !

About a 15 minute pregame.  I have to confess that I never listen to the present day pre-game show.

The recording is from Schenectady stations WGY WGFM, their commercial stepped on the intro so not sure who the announcer is, but he says Hank Aaron :(

The announcer mentions this several times in the Gillette ads:

Pretty clever.  Here is one on Ebay:

Earl takes over the play-by-play from Bob Neil after 4 1/2 innings.

In the 5th, Whitey Ford walks Warren Spahn on 4 pitches !  Sometimes having the pitcher hit was interesting, maybe it speeded up the game ?  Game 1 was only 2 hr 10 min long.  Ford went the whole 9 innings.

The Braves lost this first game: 3-1 BUT as we all know, the Braves did win the series :)
