The Second QST Cover Photo
Previous blog post on the June 1979 QST cover photo:

I got an email from a person in London, England and he attached this:
He wanted to know if it was my picture and whether I was open to having it used as artwork on an album of electronic music. And also: did I have a higher resolution picture. I pointed him to the Glen Gates Gang page:

which has this scan:

Unfortunately I don't have the original slides, Sam Sansone, WB9LAB, had them and after he and his wife died I don't know what happened to them. I was given a dupe of the slide (which is where that scan came from) but I'll be darned if I know where it is - along with all the other junk I've misplaced over the years - it must be here somewhere.
So if that scan isn't good enough the second chance for that picture to be published is going to evaporate. Stuff happens after over 4 decades - I'm hoping some Photoshop wizardry on his part will save the project.
BTW, let me reiterate the details of the Tilton tower as I recall them. It was originally a 70 foot tall, all-aluminum, free standing tower used by one of the Glen Gates Gang, Jerry Lieberthal. The tower (I *assume* it was the bottom section) crumpled during a storm. The Nicolet club was offered the wreckage. It was shortened and made transportable for Field Day use. But the genius (and scary) part of the conversion was that an extension bringing the tower back to it's original 70 feet was dreamed up and executed. The extension used steel pipe (!) which is guyed at the top and middle. In addition there are two more sets of guys on the tower itself, a total of 12 guy ropes. The raising of the tower required a good sized crew - it's probably a miracle that we never really experienced bad weather (wind) on Field Day. I remember the first year I went on Field Day (1972) the tower was put up on top of a hill in the Kettle Moraine. But I didn't take any pictures of the tower that I remember. It was much easier to erect on the Evans farm.
Unfortunately Scott Tilton is gone, Jerry Lieberthal seems to have let his ticket lapse, and the others in the know aren't communicating but I'd be happy to hear any comments on the tower.
I'll update with another blog post if anything happens with the picture.
Best Regards,
