| The way Dizzy is looking at Ella is amazing - a decisive moment kind of like the pictures Cartier-Bresson or Gary Winogrand took - this picture was by William Gottlieb https://www.newsweek.com/30-stunning-photos-golden-age-jazz-1582109 |
I *think* it was the first holiday season I worked at GTE (1977). I went to the lunchroom as usual but in addition to the usual fare we were all treated to a mini-concert. GTE in Northlake IL had clubs, all kinds of them - even photography and ham radio as I recall. But they also had a music club of some kind because there was a combo in the lunchroom. And the weird thing I remember is that the secretary for the QA department, Maryanne (think she was the union steward) stood up and belted out Summertime in an operatic soprano. About the only times I had heard her voice before was when she took phone messages and said stuff like: "I think he's out in the shop". Never would I have expected such an amazing performance - Maryanne was an older lady with the cats eye glasses and don't try to use her IBM Selectric ! - paraphrasing Andy Griffith: she had a high roof to her mouth :)
As I recall Maryanne eventually retired and moved to Vegas. I remember seeing a newlettery Christmas greeting she sent to her friends called: The Starship, which contained at least a few typos :)
That's the somewhat boring Summertime story from bleak, gray but not snowy Washington Island.
