1963 exhibition game: Packers versus College All Stars

Yes, the Packers actually lost 20-17 !  This was the last time the pro team lost to the College All Stars in this annual exhibition game.  The Packers were the reigning champions of the NFL in 1962.  The Packers were without Hornung and Nitschke and would eventually end the 1963 season 11-2-1, losing twice to the Bears (eventual NFL champions in 1963) !  There is a fun video summary of the game on Youtube:

And yes, they do add an S to Soldier Field in Chicago (as well as almost everything else):

I happened to watch this video because I first saw these two video highlights of the Packers 1962 and 1963 seasons:

Here is a nice pdf file on the game:

The Packers drafted or acquired these defensive College All Stars from this game:  Dave Robinson, Lee Roy Caffey and Lionel Aldridge - all eventually starters with the Packers.

I especially remember Lionel Aldridge from his post football career on WTMJ in Milwaukee - Lionel is the reason why I say DE-troit instead of de-troit  :)

I did notice another name on the Packers roster pdf linked above:  Jack Cverko who was listed as a backup at right guard behind Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer.  I met Jack Cverko's brother, Andy, after football in the 1980s when he was an engineer with Fairchild Test Systems at their Illinois office.  Andy had also been on the Packers roster but had an injury shortened career which was also true of Jack:

Andy was a really nice guy, soft spoken but obviously you knew he had been a football player, they just look different.  I felt kinda bad because visitors to our area of GTE had to walk about a 1/4 mile to the very back of the plant (receiving inspection) and Andy wasn't so spry due to injuries.  One other thing I remember about Andy was that he taped all his phone calls with customers (which he did mention, you could hear the cassette being put in and the record being pressed at the start of the calls).  So somewhere in some landfill there are tapes of me talking to Andy :)

See the internet isn't all bad, lots of memories get triggered by videos and documents.
