The Hallicrafters SX-28

Yesterday the SX-88 was mentioned as a 4-gang type of receiver, here are the dual 4-gang tuning caps, main tuning and bandspread:

But the SX-88 wasn't that popular, however the Hallicrafters SX-28 was also a 4-gang general coverage receiver but thanks to World War II tens of thousands were sold.  And as can be seen in this photo from the manual

there are the four ganged caps but (similar to the SX-88) some of the caps have multiple sections - the complexity boggles the mind !

one famous listener to the SX-28 was President Truman in the Oval Office !  It is on that little table below the other table behind the Truman desk:
 
The SX-28 was arguably the best general coverage receiver during World War II, so why not the best for the President ?  :)

It's interesting that after a long period of no-tune type of input filtering for receivers some current higher end rigs like the IC-7610 have tracking preselectors that are relay tuned automagically as the frequency is changed !
