I remember as a kid in the Milwaukee area we went trick or treating on the evening BEFORE Halloween, it was called: Beggars Night:

I always remember one house on the next street to the west which had a basket with a sign:  Take One !   Yes, the basket was completely empty by the time we got there.  I wonder if they set it out that way ?  :)
