Food and kids

I remember reading something about the dime novels / series books published about 100 years ago for kids.  These were usually a series of books written by hired guns and then published under some omnibus pen name.  There is one about Washington Island that I digitized:

But getting back to what someone said about those books, one of the editors would inform his authors to include plenty of descriptions of meals and food:  "because boys like to eat".  It's 100 years later and I know that I still like to eat even though I've lost a lot of my sense of smell/taste over the decades.

Anyway, I was listening to the Heinlein juvenile science fiction book: "Farmer in the Sky":

when I heard this passage (it's at about 3hours,4 minutes into the video):
.

whoever owned this book also took note of this passage

I wonder if Heinlein's editor at Scribner's gave him the same advice ?  It wasn't the editor at Boys' Life magazine where the book was serialized as "Satellite Scout" because the passage isn't present.

This weekend is also the 50th reunion of the 1973 Nicolet High School class.  I didn't attend the reunion but heard about it from a fellow I've known since 1961.  The attendees got a walking tour of the old school and the school board is putting money into the place which is good.

However, I hope that some of that money is being spent on the cafeteria because when I went to Nicolet the food was really uninspiring.  Which was a shame since as I've blogged before, Maple Dale Grade School had excellent lunches:
