SNL

Image
I can remember a couple of things about that first season of Saturday Night Live or Live from New York it's Saturday Night that most might not remember.  Sure the land shark and the Coneheads were memorable: . source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_NS2H55dxI . source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrUOFs-hZ-M But the main thing about SNL was just the general goofiness and willingness to try out different stuff.  Current SNL seems to be like an old scratchy record, still working the old grooves over and over again. Anyway, first thing remembered were the puppets (Muppets).  Per the wiki it was titled: The land of Gorch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Land_of_Gorch The great and mighty Favog, the talking stone idol would always respond:  "talk to me" Second was George Coe, the "old" member of the SNL cast.  He had a long and varied acting career (see the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Coe  but the one thing that Jean Shepherd fans will rem...

Graph-tie

Image
My Grandmother was originally from a small town in northern Wisconsin: Mattoon.  She was the second wife of my Grandfather, so not a blood relation.  We used to go over to see the grandparents fairly often, usually on a Sunday afternoon.  I remember one visit which took place after Grandma had retired from teaching high-school in Milwaukee.  She had visited one of the schools where she had taught (I forget which one, it wasn't her last school: Custer High School).  Anyway she was kinda angry, the first thing she noticed at the school was the graph-tie.  I was thinking to myself: "what is graph-tie ?" :)  As she continued to vent it became clear that she meant: graffiti. This morning Bing.com featured this photo on their home page: source: https://www.bing.com/th?id=OHR.FremontPetroglyph_EN-US9601526664_1920x1200.jpg&rf=LaDigue_1920x1200.jpg info: And the first thing I thought was:  "Graph-tie !" Paper Lion

Image
. I remember a TV movie of the book: Paper Lion where Alan Alda took the part of George Plimpton, a sportswriter whose niche was writing about his attempts (as an amateur) to play various professional sports.  Paper Lion was the tale of how George would prepare and attempt to run some plays as the QB of the Detroit Lions against the Lions defense. The only items I remember from the movie were that pro football is FAST, one delayed step can mean disaster - the other thing was that the helmet George was given was too small. source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQNHrmotd7c Anyway I recently learned that Sports Illustrated has a free online archive of old issues, here is how Paper Lion was excerpted in the September 7th and 14th 1964 issues of SI: part 1: https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/09/07/43151#&gid=ci0258be1a6008278a&pid=43151---104---image part 2: https://vault.si.com/vault/1964/09/14/42899#&gid=ci0258c005600826ef&pid=42899---034---image This is almost like whe...

This video popped up on Youtube

. A guy builds a 6 cylinder internal combustion engine,in miniature, from a kit, amazing. source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHaIpbp998Q Cool motor kit but the price, yikes ! lets try to view that in 1967 terms: Still seems kinda expensive to me but an interesting video.  Seems to me though that it would be even neater if there was a model car or truck kit where it could be installed.  How about a 1965 Mustang ? A guy named Butkus (1942-2023)

Image
. . source: https://twitter.com/nut_history/status/1710067710258802729 From the 1972 season, December 10,  Chicago Bears 21, Philadelphia Eagles 12. This was a bad snap missed extra point, so Butkus scored 1 point (that's why Pat Summerall says singleton). source: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/197212100phi.htm The offended Eagles player, 28, was named Bill Bradley. Personally while the Bears had all time greats in the 1965-1973 seasons like Butkus (and Gale Sayers), I'd take the 2 Super Bowl wins of the Packers rather than the 2 winning seasons of the Bears. I wonder if anyone ever called him Richard ? Best Regards, Chuck, WB9KZY http://wb9kzy.com/ham.htm
